Market Data
IBA's "Market Database" is the largest database of guideline transactions for valuing mid sized and smaller businesses. The database includes information on over 30,300 sales of closely held businesses in more than 725 SIC Codes. Access to the database is free to IBA members. Upon request, IBA members may obtain hard copy data by SIC Codes via U.S. mail, or the data may be obtained in an electronic format (Excel spreadsheet) via email delivery. In an effort to make the use of transaction data more systematic, IBA's founder, Raymond C. Miles, MCBA, ASA, developed the Direct Market Data Method (DMDM), the most readily understood method for valuing mid sized and smaller businesses. The DMDM employs the true theory of the "Principle of Substitution" by analyzing arms length, 100% interest transactions of similar private businesses. IBA is pleased to offer the publication "Introduction to The Direct Market Data Method of Valuing Mid-Sized and Smaller Closely Held Businesses" by Raymond C. Miles, MCBA, ASA, to assist you in understanding the DMDM methodology. See the Publications area of this website for information about ordering this publication.
If you would like to submit transactions to the database, please use this form or contact hqiba@go-iba.org with any questions about data submission.
Bibliographic Data File
Thorough research is essential to producing a sound business appraisal. Through constant surveillance of the BV and related industries, IBA continually updates its database of appraisal-related information. The "Sources" database houses over 15,000 BV related references to books, magazine articles, seminar presentations, lectures, and specialized "who knows" files of experts. Searches of the database are conducted on request by subject and/or industry. Members may request searches by contacting IBA's Technical Director. This service is available exclusively to members at no cost.
Technical Inquiry Service
IBA's industry-unique "How-to Hotline" connects members who have questions to staff or members who have answers. Members with technical, ethical or other questions related to business valuation may contact IBA's Technical Director, who will initiate that member's contact with a topic expert. This assistance is available exclusively to IBA members at no cost.
Newsletter
The IBA News is sent free to all members six times a year. This newsletter highlights technical issues, industry news, marketing and practice aids, and keeps members posted on events within IBA. Surveys ask for your feedback on how we can enhance the value of your IBA membership. Special "thank you" offers for members who contribute market data are also found in the newsletter.
Market Analysis Portfolio
This report is a valuable analytical tool which summarizes real world transactions in specific SIC Codes. With this information, the appraiser can objectively place the subject business in the market. Provided in report quality, the MAP includes scatter-graphs of real world business sales in the desired SIC code, and displays sale prices versus gross revenues and sale prices versus net earnings. Reports provide computation of average, median, quartiles, and top/bottom ten percent transactions by price to gross and price to earnings ratios, Rules of Thumb, and RMA Annual Statement Studies data with a special copyright for one-time inclusion in the appraisal report. The graphs and analysis included in this report are an integral part of the Direct Market Data Method. Available exclusively to IBA members for $265, non-member $495 per SIC Code.
IBA Research Service
IBA provides top quality research support, specifically designed to meet and exceed the needs of all IBA members. Typical reports encompass detailed information about national and regional economic conditions affecting your subject company, industry-specific economic factors, and short-term forecasts for industry growth. Each report can be custom-tailored to a selected date of record, and will be delivered via hard copy, plus email or fax. This service is available to IBA members at an hourly charge of $69, and to non-members for an hourly fee of $125.
