More than just an association of professionals, the Institute of Business Appraisers will help you succeed in this exciting specialty business field. Furthermore, your IBA membership serves to reinforce your professional status and lends additional credence to your appraisals.

Market Data

IBA's "Market Database" is the largest database of guideline transactions for valuing mid sized and smaller businesses. The database includes information on over 30,300 sales of closely held businesses in more than 725 SIC Codes. Access to the database is free to IBA members. In an effort to make the use of transaction data more systematic, IBA's founder, Raymond C. Miles, MCBA, ASA, developed the Direct Market Data Method (DMDM), the most readily understood method for valuing mid sized and smaller businesses. The DMDM employs the true theory of the "Principle of Substitution" by analyzing arms length, 100% interest transactions of similar private businesses. IBA is pleased to offer the publication "Introduction to The Direct Market Data Method of Valuing Mid-Sized and Smaller Closely Held Businesses" by Raymond C. Miles, MCBA, ASA, to assist you in understanding the DMDM methodology. See the Publications area of this website for information about ordering this publication.

If you would like to submit transactions to the database, please contact Jason Brown at 954-607-6727 or e-mail jbrown@go-iba.org.

Bibliographic Data File

Thorough research is essential to producing a sound business appraisal. Through constant surveillance of the BV and related industries, IBA continually updates its database of appraisal-related information. The "Sources" database houses over 15,000 BV related references to books, magazine articles, seminar presentations, lectures, and specialized "who knows" files of experts. Searches of the database are conducted on request by subject and/or industry. Members may request searches by contacting IBA's Technical Director. This service is available exclusively to members at no cost.

Technical Inquiry Service

IBA's industry-unique "How-to Hotline" connects members who have questions to staff or members who have answers. Members with technical, ethical or other questions related to business valuation may contact IBA's Technical Director, who will initiate that member's contact with a topic expert. This assistance is available exclusively to IBA members at no cost.
